"Once Upon a Mattress" Cast Announced

Winder-Barrow Community Theatre is proud to announce the cast of the third show of the 2013 Season, Once Upon a Mattress. This musical comedy will open on Friday August 10th and run for two weekends. Advance tickets are now on sale at a discount price. Adults are $12.50 in advance, and Seniors, students and teachers are only $10 in advance. You can purchase tickets at Winder City Hall (770-867-3106) or at Pam Veader’s State Farm Insurance Office (770-867-1679) in Winder.
On May 11, 1959 a little known actress made her Broadway debut in a musical comedy. That actress was Carol Burnett; her role was Winnifred the Woebegone, and the musical was Once Upon a Mattress. In 2005, Disney produced a 90 minute made-for-television version of the same musical featuring Carol Burnett as Queen Aggravain. In the years between these two productions, Once Upon a Mattress was aired twice on television (1964 and 1972,) and was revived on the Broadway stage in 1996. Throughout its history, this musical comedy version of “The Princess and the Pea” has delighted audiences with its satirical and physical humor.
The composer, Mary Rodgers, was the daughter of Richard Rodgers—famous for his collaborations with both Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II. In addition to Carol Burnett, other well-known performers in the various productions included Ken Berry, Jack Gilford, Bernadette Peters, Lyle Waggoner, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jane Krakowski, Matthew Morrison, Tracy Ullman, Tom Smothers, and even Kermit the Frog.
